Thanks for sending us these. I’m subscribed to Writing4Effect and Sherry gives some excellent advice here for would-be writers. I liked your comment about joining a read and critique group as I think it’s essential to get feedback, comments, suggestions, editing, etc. and especially the motivation to go on/not give up. However, you have to be very careful that the group is a good one and not just some kind of writing support group where everyone compliments everyone else. Usually, what may seem like harsh critiques are the ones that help us grow more as writers. Also, we need to develop a thick skin for criticism as we’re going to receive plenty of that along the way.
Yes, I agree with what you say. A critique group should not be a “complement bank.” We are fortunate in our community to have a few excellent critique groups that give honest and forthright suggestions and comments. Even when doing my graduate coursework in technical writing, all of our instructors demanded that we give “real critiques” of our peers. It was great experience from both sides and definitely thickens the skin 🙂
